Data

Discovery and Acquisition

The UC Davis Library provides support with finding existing datasets for your research. Dataset purchase requests may be made to the UC Davis Library on a limited basis. For direct purchases contact your departmental business manager. Innovation Access assists with Materials Transfer Agreements for data to, or from, external entities.

Analysis and Visualization

DataLab offers just-in-time help during Office Hours, data science instruction at its short-format workshops, and dedicated project help through “start-up” research awards and recharge contracts.

The Department of Statistics’ Stat Lab offers help on a recharge basis.

Support for working with specific data types and/or generated by campus instruments may also be available through campus centers and Research Core Facilities. For example, services for processing ‘omics samples and data are available through the Bioinformatics Core. For analyzing health data see the Biostatistics program at the Clinical and Translational Science Center, and for protected health informatics support at the Health Data Resources

Publishing, Sharing, and Preservation

Learn how to make your data FAIR, obtain a DOU and ORCID, and discover subject-specific data repositories at the UC Davis Library.

Storage

To learn about options for physical data storage and backup, contact your departmental IT.

Discover additional university-provided or contract-based options for storing your research data on the cloud. Limits on data size, access, and type apply.

For working with protected health data, see resources at UC Davis Health.

Security

Your research data may require specific security protocols for how it can be gathered, stored, and shared.

The Data Classification Guide can help you identify what type of data you have.

The Data Sensitivity Guide is another helpful resource for learning about specific compute constraints given your particular research data. For further support and additional questions contact your College or School IT.

Management

Most funding agencies require you to write a Data Management Plan for your grant proposals. For help writing a DMP see the Library’s DMP guide.
